MALG AI FLUENCY IN DEBT ADVICE PROJECT

Money Advice Liaison Group (MALG), in partnership with WyserAI, has secured funding from the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) Debt Advice Transformation Fund to deliver an AI Fluency in Debt Advice Project.

The project will help debt advisers, debt advice organisations and people seeking debt advice build the understanding, judgement and confidence needed to engage with AI safely and effectively.

This follows the successful completion of MALG and WyserAI’s previous MaPS-funded research project exploring safe and effective use of Generative AI in Regulated Debt Advice, which produced a sector-wide evidence report, AI roadmap and safe-use framework. The research highlighted four key challenges facing the sector: advisers need the confidence to judge AI rather than simply use it, organisational readiness is lagging behind growing adoption, client behaviour is evolving as AI becomes more mainstream and getting AI wrong can have serious consequences. The findings reinforced the importance of professional judgement, organisational safeguards and informed decision-making whenever AI is used in debt advice settings.

This new project takes the next step by turning research into practical support for the sector and individuals seeking debt advice. Developed with the sector, not just for the sector, it will translate evidence into resources that help people make better-informed decisions about AI.

MALG is uniquely placed to lead this work. Its trusted reputation, extensive sector reach and strong relationships across the debt landscape will help ensure the resources are developed with the sector, for the sector, supporting meaningful adoption and lasting impact.

Between October 2026 and March 2027, MALG, working with WyserAI, will develop a suite of resources that will be shaped and tested by advisers, compliance professionals, organisational leaders and people with lived experience of debt.

What the project will deliver

The project is focused on three audiences, three practical resources and one shared goal, better-informed decisions about AI.

  • AI Fluency Course for debt advisers
Helping advisers understand, question and assess AI-generated information.
  • Plain-English Client AI Toolkit
Helping people seeking debt advice recognise AI’s opportunities, limitations and risks.
  • Organisational Readiness Pack
Providing practical tools, a readiness self-assessment and a model AI usage policy to help organisations adopt AI safely and responsibly.

Together, these resources support a holistic approach to AI fluency. Better outcomes depend on confident advisers, responsible organisations and informed clients working as part of the same system.

All resources will be made available to the wider sector on this web page following the project’s completion.

The project will also generate new learning for policymakers and the wider advice sector about what supports safe, effective and responsible AI adoption. Adviser capability and organisational readiness will be measured throughout the programme, helping to build a stronger evidence base on what works when implementing AI in debt advice settings.

Findings will be shared through learning reports, webinars, MALG forums and open-access resources to support broader sector development.

Taking Part

We are looking for debt advisers from organisations of any size to form the development cohort for the new AI Fluency Course.

Participants do not need to be using AI already or have an AI policy in place. In fact, organisations at an earlier stage of their AI journey are just as important to the project as those with more experience, helping ensure the resources are practical and relevant across the whole sector.

Each organisation is asked to nominate an adviser who can commit approximately eight hours of their time. In November and December 2026, participants will be asked to review the draft AI Fluency Course, Client AI Toolkit and Organisational Readiness Pack. They will then be invited to take part in the facilitated course during January 2027 and complete assessments.

It would also be valuable for a compliance, governance, legal, or quality assurance colleague to contribute approximately four hours to review and test the materials.

We are also looking to speak with people who have lived experience of debt to test the Client AI Toolkit’s readability and comprehension. Participants will not be asked about their own debts or circumstances.

All participation is voluntary and incentives for both individuals and organisations will be available in recognition of their time and contribution.

All adviser responses will be pseudonymised, meaning individual results will never be shared with employers. Reporting will be aggregated to protect confidentiality and encourage honest feedback throughout the project.
