Introducing our new CEO!

We are delighted to announce that Peg Alexander will take up the position of MALG CEO from the beginning of March 2026 ahead of Bob’s departure at the end of that month. Peg brings more than 30 years’ experience across broadcasting, communications, public service, and the voluntary sector. Her career has focused on social justice, poverty, and community engagement, alongside a prominent profile as a television and radio presenter and event host. Read more here.

Conference 2026 – Save the Date

National Members Meeting February 2026

Huge thanks to the more than 100 of you who attended Bob’s last ever MALG National Members Meeting this morning.

Fascinating sessions from Chris Fitch of Money Advice Trust, Jane Tully of HM Treasury, Mark Pearce of Wyser and Chris Nichols of Enforcement Conduct Board gave attendees an up-to-the-minute summary of what’s happening across diverse areas of the debt landscape from vulnerability and government to AI advice and enforcement.

]]> The Money Advice Liaison Group (MALG) has appointed Peg Alexander as its next CEO. She will take up the position in March 2026, succeeding long‑standing CEO Bob Winnington, who retires at the end of that month after a decade leading the organisation.

Peg brings more than 30 years’ experience across broadcasting, communications, public service, and the voluntary sector. Her career has focused on social justice, poverty, and community engagement, alongside a prominent profile as a television and radio presenter and event host.

Announcing the appointment, MALG Chair Fiona Hoyle said:

“Peg brings a rare combination of strategic insight, communications expertise, and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for people in vulnerable circumstances. The Board was impressed by her vision for MALG’s future and her ability to bring diverse voices together. We are delighted to welcome her as the new CEO.”

Accepting the offer of the MALG CEO role, Peg Alexander commented:

“MALG plays a unique and vital role in fostering collaboration across the debt ecosystem, and I am excited to build on the strong foundations laid under Bob’s leadership. My focus will be on strengthening partnerships, amplifying MALG’s independent voice, and ensuring that people in debt remain at the heart of every conversation. I look forward to working with members, stakeholders, and the wider community to shape the future together.”

Current MALG CEO Bob Winnington commented:

“It has been a privilege to serve MALG and to work with so many dedicated professionals across the debt and money advice landscape. I am proud of what we have achieved together and confident that Peg will bring fresh energy and leadership to guide the organisation into its next chapter.”

MALG is the only UK membership organisation that spans the whole debt landscape. Membership is open to all public, private and third sector organisations which have an interest in matters relating to personal debt, from financial capability and lending, through to debt collection and money advice and there are eight MALG Regional Groups across the UK.

]]> Money Advice Liaison Group (MALG), the only UK membership organisation with a reach across the whole debt landscape, has secured funding from Money & Pensions Service for a new research initiative exploring what safeguards are needed to ensure Generative AI is used safely for debt advice.

The research project, entitled ‘Exploring Safe & Effective Self‑Serve in Regulated Debt Advice in the Generative AI Era’, is being delivered in partnership with AI innovation company Wyser, whose founder and CEO Mark Pearce spoke on the AI panel at the MALG Conference 2025.

MALG and Wyser are inviting professionals from across the debt advice ecosystem to take part in one‑to‑one interviews in January and February 2026, that will shape the future of digital advice delivery.

The rapid rise of Generative AI tools, such as chatbots, means that people seeking help with debt are increasingly turning to unregulated digital sources. While these tools offer potential benefits around accessibility, convenience and early engagement, they also raise important questions about safety, trust, suitability and the risk of consumer harm.

MALG CEO Bob Winnington, said:

“The debt advice sector can’t afford to ignore the pace at which clients are already experimenting with AI tools for financial support. We need evidence, not assumptions, to understand where AI can genuinely help, where it poses risks, and how it can work alongside human advisers rather than replace them.”

The study will examine opportunities, limitations and risks of AI‑enabled self‑serve debt advice tools; how consumers behave when interacting with them; how advisers, managers and quality leads assess the risks; where expectations of AI diverge from the realities of delivering advice; and the conditions under which AI‑enabled self‑serve can be used safely.

Mark Pearce, Founder and CEO of Wyser, added:

“This is exploratory, foundational work. It will not evaluate or endorse any specific AI product, nor will it replace regulated human advice. Instead, it aims to build a robust evidence base to inform future policy, funding and digital strategy across the sector.”

Findings will feed into a suite of practical resources designed to support responsible experimentation and innovation in debt advice including an evidence report, a safe-use framework and a pack of reusable guidance and messaging templates for providers.

PRA Group will continue its Sponsorship of not-for-profit organisation Money Advice Liaison Group’s (MALG) Members Friday Forum throughout 2026.

The MALG Members Friday Forum was launched in March 2020 to enable money advisers, creditors, regulators, policy-makers and others from the financial services and advice sectors in the UK to advance MALG’s aim of ‘working together to improve the lives of people in debt’ throughout the Covid-19 lockdown. PRA Group’s sponsorship has enabled the Forum to continue on a fortnightly basis ever since.

It has become an invaluable resource for those supporting the most vulnerable in society during the cost of living crisis and beyond.

National Members Virtual Meeting 2 October

Thank you to all 80+ people who attended our National Members Virtual Meeting on 2 October. Feedback on the speakers and sessions was excellent and it was great to see such good attendance.The full slide deck and the usual Insolvency Service Update is now available on the password-protected web page.

Participation in the Buy-Now-Pay-Later research session with Swansea University and University of Gloucestershire was fantastic and will be used as part of this important ongoing project which MALG is proudly supporting – watch this space!

Members Friday Forum

Whether you’re a regular, have attended before, a Member who’s yet to take advantage of this hugely popular benefit, or you have a colleague who would like to attend, we would be delighted to welcome you on screen for an hour of informal, open – and usually lively! – debate on the latest issues facing those across the debt landscape. The sessions attract up to 60 Members and often result in tangible solutions and collaborative opportunities so don’t miss out.

]]> Following his LinkedIn announcement that he will be retiring at the end of March 2026, exactly ten years after taking on the role, Money Advice Liaison Group (MALG) has opened its search for a replacement for its CEO Bob Winnington.

The remote, flexible role is four days per week and MALG is seeking a visionary, dynamic and empathetic leader to build on the strong foundations laid over the past decade.

The successful candidate will need to be deeply aligned with MALG’s purpose and values and will lead the organisation into its next chapter, enhancing its impact, expanding its reach, and ensuring it continues to be a respected and valued voice in the money advice and debt sector.

This is a rare opportunity to lead a well-respected organisation with a unique role in the UK’s debt and money advice landscape. The new CEO will join a passionate community of professionals committed to making a real difference in people’s lives, and will have the chance to shape the future of collaborative money advice and debt solutions.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 14 October 2025 and initial interviews will be held in London on Friday 24 October 2025.

CEO Retirement

Speaking of Bob’s retirement, for those of you who missed his announcement on LinkedIn on 19 August, MALG CEO Bob Winnington will be retiring after 10 transformational years on 31 March 2026. The tributes have already been pouring in and, needless to say, he will be much missed and leaves a fantastic legacy. The search for his successor will begin very soon – watch this space!

We’ve been very busy over the last six weeks recording the latest MALG Podcast episodes with Lee Healey of IncomeMAX (who we did a special edition video episode with!) and Chris Leslie of Credit Services Association. We also have another already lined up to go out in early October with a guest who has some fascinating insights on the world of Buy-Now-Pay-Later debt – watch this space.Whilst Lee and Chris may be familiar to many of you, a lot of what they talk about in these in-depth episodes is likely to be completely new to you (as it was to us) and well worth a listen. We launched the Podcast in response to Member appetite to dive deeper into topics with our expert speakers and really get under the skin of how we can ‘work together to improve the lives of people in debt’.
